Belt Levels in Kung-Fu

Everyone is aware of the vaunted black belt, but how do you get there? What are the belts between and what do they mean?
In order to achieve your black belt in Kung-fu, students are challenged, but that’s what makes the earning of a belt so worthwhile. Let’s have a look at the different belts, and what they mean. Remember, that every school runs their program differently, but this list should give you a rough estimate of what to expect.

White
White belt is what you start off with. While you may not feel confident while wearing the white, feel secure in the knowledge that this is the beginning of your journey. This belt is extremely important. The things you learn now will give you a solid foundation from which to earn every other color of belt in the future.
The white belt takes at least 2 months to earn. You will be taught the major stances, basic punching and kicking.

Gold
Gold belt takes about 3 months to earn. At this level you’re still building on the basic techniques you learned in white belt level.

Orange
Orange belt, like its predecessor, takes about three months to earn. At this level you will be taught more advanced hand movements, punches, kicks and blocks. You will also begin to learn about fighting strategy.

Green
Green belt will take about 4 months to earn. At this point your training will become harder. In the last year you’ve come a long way, and your strength, speed and technique should be far better than it was at the beginning of your journey.

Blue
Blue will take about 4 months to earn. By now you’re salivating at the chance of earning a black belt. Blue level is where you can begin learning how to use weapons, such as the broadsword. Training is more vigorous as well.

Red
Red belt is the final belt before black. By now you should have techniques down to a science. You must show superior speed, power and form when executing your techniques. You can expect to take about 6 months to complete your red belt.

Black
You’ve made it! The black belt is the final belt level, but very few students make it this far. It will take you over a year to earn your black belt, but it’s well worth it.
