How to Choose a Martial Arts School

Tip For Choosing A Good Martial Arts School

There are several things you should take into consideration when choosing a martial arts school. After all, you'll probably be spending a good deal of time at whichever school you choose, so it's a good idea to choose wisely.

Vicinity

Is the school close to where you live? A quick look at your yellow pages should turn up a listing of the schools near you. You don't want to travel 50 miles to go to class three times per week!

Goals

Ask yourself what your goals are. Are you interested in becoming a black belt? Is your goal to lose weight, become more active and to have fun, or is your goal to become a serious martial artist, who competes in tournaments?

Observe

Before choosing a school, watch a few of their lessons. Most martial arts schools allow visitors to observe a lesson. Make sure you ask permission first, but watching a few lessons is always a good way to gauge whether that particular school is right for you.

The instructor

Are you comfortable with the instructor? Talk with them for a few minutes. See if they're courteous, and ask about their experience. You'll feel more comfortable and have a better experience if you can get along with your instructor.

Style

Some schools emphasize discipline, and teach their students in a military like fashion. Other schools are more relaxed and emphasize having fun. Most people prefer one or the other. If you're in it to have fun, or for recreation, the latter type of school is probably better. However, if you're looking to fight in tournaments, or just plain learn better by having an instructor that is strict, the former type of school is for you.

These are the main points that you should address when choosing a martial arts school. It's a big decision, but by following these guidelines, you're sure to have a far better experience than you would if you hadn't followed them.
