Martial arts of any kind can me fun and exciting. It can also be a lot of work and take quite a long time to accomplish a mastery level. It is almost inevitable that during ones years doing martial arts some teaching and training of lower belt levels is involved. Higher level students will often teach some classes which is really part of most martial art training programs. There comes a point for a lot of students where they ask themselves if they want to make martial arts a career either as an instructor and maybe even open a school of their own, or through a career of professional competition.

Being a karate instructor or martial arts instructor usually involves a lot more than just being good at martial arts. As a matter of fact, skill level is not really the most important thing to being a good instructor. This applies to almost any sport or for that matter any kind of teaching scenario. Of course some skill and knowledge is required but to be good at teaching requires some other form of wisdom and understanding not always gained through performing the art itself.

The best way to find out if you have what it takes to be a good teacher is to jump in a start teaching. As mentioned above most martial arts schools will require their students to get involved at some point with leading or teaching classes and other students below their own ranking. If you enjoy teaching then you already posses most of what you need to become a good teacher. The rest comes from staying open minded, continuing to learn yourself and a whole host of other things, to many to list in this article.

Even being a good teacher though does not mean you will be able to run a successful martial arts school. Martial arts schools are like many businesses in a great number of ways. There are some good books and resources available that make opening your own school a much less risky venture and can greatly increase your chances of success.

Here a few books to consider. They are inexpensive and can be downloaded immediately:
