Basic Stretching for Martial Arts
Rolling the shoulders, head, wrists and hips around is usually the first stretch you’ll learn in martial arts. It allows you to limber up the joints, tendons and ligaments before putting those areas under stress. Touch your toesEveryone has probably done this stretch as some point in their lives. Basically, you just stand straight and bend over until you touch your toes. If you can’t touch your toes, just grasp your ankles and hold the position for a count of ten. Rise slowly, and repeat 3-4 more times. This stretch, while basic, is amazing at lengthening your hamstrings. The V stretchSit on the floor and position your legs in front of you so that they resemble a “V.” Lean over slowly, and try to touch your toes. Your right hand should touch your right foot, and your left hand your left foot. The splitsMen grimace at the thought of doing the splits. However, it is a very good stretch. Spread your legs apart as far as they will go, and if you want to add some variation, you can bend over until your almost in a push-up position, before straightening up once more. The arm bar Put one arm behind your back from the top, near your head or neck, and the other hand behind your back near your waist. Now try to interlock the fingers of both hands. This stretch may sound easy, but many people are incapable of doing it. There’s a list of the basic stretches you’ll need to know if you want to be in martial arts. By practicing these stretches on a daily basis, you’ll improve your flexibility and decrease your chances of being injured. |
