The Number One Thing to Look for in a Martial Arts School

Martial Arts Schools :: What to look for...

You decided to begin taking martial arts or get back into it or perhaps are looking to get your children started at a karate school. If you live in a bigger city and you open up the phone book you will soon realize there are probably have too many choices. I am not going to get into which type or style martial art to choose, but rather what to look for in the school or club that offers some type of martial art training.

Firstly you will need to ask yourself why it is you are taking martial arts. Are you interested in self defense, self discipline, exercise, the sport, etc, etc. Then you need to ask, what is your goal or goals. The top priority on most peoples list when looking for a karate school is location and price. Though these are important factors but there is one other thing that should come first. The organization the school belongs too. This is important for any style of Karate for a number of reasons.

You would not attend a College or University if the degree it was going to grant you after four or more years of hard work is not valid anywhere or only at the University itself. The more places that recognize your degree the better and not only recognize but also respect and look highly upon your degree the better. The same hold true for martial arts schools. You may start off thinking that you only want to try it out but then after 6 months or so you realize it you like it and want to continue and pursue things. If the school or club is self accredited and does not belong to any recognized organization you will have a hard time if you ever want to compete, move schools, or start up your own school.

There are numerous organizations around the world. Too many in my opinion. It is not hard to check into an Instructor and their school or club. They should be happy to provide you with all the details of the organization they belong to. This may not seem too important when you are training at your under belt levels, but as soon as you reach upper levels and or you start competing it will soon become apparent that belonging to a good organization with large and wide numbers has many benefits. Don’t let the convenience of school proximity or small savings in monthly fees influence your decision. In the long run it could cost you a lot more.
