Kung-fu

Kung-fu is the most widely practiced martial art. It's based around defence, as opposed to offense. Kung-fu originated in China, and has been around for hundreds of years. In fact, Shaolin monks perfected kung-fu, and used it to defend themselves and their temples from bandits. It's survived so long because it works.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo originated in Korea. It's a relatively new martial art that is used in the Korean military. Their troops practice it, and it has really taken off as one of the foremost martial arts. You can watch Taekwondo tournaments in the Olympics, and if you enjoy kicking, it's the martial art for you. Taekwondo is based around the idea that your legs are far more powerful than your arms; making kicks your best offensive weapon.

Judo is based around the older art form of jujutsu, which was heavily used by samurai warriors. It is a defence style fighting art that teaches students to use an opponent's momentum and body weight against them. Known for its spectacular throws, judo is definitely one of the most popular martial arts on the planet.

Karate

When someone mentions martial arts, the first thought that leaps to most peoples' minds is karate. Karate is an attack style martial art. It's loosely based on the tiger, and teaches students to try and disable an opponent as fast as possible.

All of the above martial art forms are practiced by millions of people around the world. They are time tested, and they definitely work.
